2025Project Overview
The centerpiece of the project was building a new Harbor Bridge in Corpus Christi, Texas, to meet modern maritime needs. The scope of work included reconstructing portions of U.S. 181, Interstate Highway 37 and the Crosstown Expressway, including a change in the alignment to interchange between U.S. 181 and Interstate 37.
At 538 feet tall and 205 feet of clearance above water, the new bridge is the tallest point in South Texas. It’s also the longest cable-stayed bridge in the United States with a main span of 1,661 feet. It replaced an outdated older structure built in the 1950s that was too low for all ocean-bound ships traveling between Corpus Christi Bay and the Port of Corpus Christi to pass beneath.
To improve the safety and efficiency of this transportation corridor, the new U.S. 181 has six driving lanes. Unlike the older bridge, the new design also incorporates a median, shoulders and a shared-use pedestrian and bicycle path. In addition, the bridge has a community plaza, nighttime LED lighting, and drought-tolerant xeriscape landscaping.
